Prime Pitchers – 5.23.17

We’ve got a Kershaw slate – BUT, we’ve got other arms that I’m extremely interested in tonight. There are two in particular that caught my eye.

Here are my favorite pitching options for tonight’s 15-game MLB DFS Slate:

*I am excluding Kershaw because he is an obvious cash game play whenever he is on the slate*

Lance McCullers ($9,400) vs. Detroit

With Lester and Cueto both looking like they will be pitching in a game that will feature some rain, the top tier option came down to Carlos Carrasco and Lance McCullers. If you are going to fade Kershaw, you should be deciding between these two, who come into this slate in good spots. While I don’t think you can wrong with either option, Lance looks to have a slight edge as he has a better matchup. Lance will be pitching at home where he is 2-0 over 4 starts this season with a 2.06 ERA. In the month of May he holds a stellar 0.71 ERA and his coming off of 3 consecutive starts without giving up an earned run. The man is simply firing on all cylinders lately and is pitching with great confidence. Houston is projected to win this game with a pretty favorable win line (-225) as this Tigers team isn’t as good as it looks on paper. Furthermore, Lance holds a 27.2% K-rate on the season and a 32.1% K-rate against righties who he will face 8 of in the Tigers starting lineup. Detroit ranks in the bottom half of the league in ISO and wOBA against righties which makes Lance look even more attractive. This tasty matchup for him will certainly cause some to consider rostering him over Clayton.

Matt Shoemaker ($8,800) @ Tampa Bay

Matt will face a Rays team that leads the in strikeouts as well as K-rate (27.1%). While having yet to receive a win on the road, he has still been effective holding a 3.57 ERA. This alone makes him an intriguing mid-level pitching option along with the lack of other options in this category of pitchers. The Rays lineup leaves much to be desired as they only have one starter who is batting over .270. If Shoemaker can get by the hot hitting Chris Dickerson (.345), he should find some success today. The Angels obviously aren’t a very good team as well and Vegas has acknowledged that giving the higher win probability to the Rays, but the large K upside in this matchup is hard to look past. You should probably be paying up for pitching today as the mid-lower priced options are lacking to say the least, but Shoemaker is your man if you don’t like the top tier options.
