MLB Sleeper Plays – 5/15/17

As opposed to my usual “Warm Front” article, I noticed a lot of under-priced hitters who could garner low ownership tonight, so I decided that I’d write up my favorite sleeper plays tonight. All of the plays are $3,600 or less.

George Springer $3,600 vs. Dan Straily (RHP) @ Marlins Park

Riding a 13 game hit streak, Springer comes into this slate as one of the hotter hitters in baseball and will get to showcase his talents on ESPN tonight. He will face up against righty Dan Straily who currently holds a 4.03 ERA but has been somewhat effective against righties. The Astros have the best record in baseball and hold the 2nd highest team batting average (.274) along with the 2nd highest amount of hits thus far. Springer is one the main variables leading to their success this season and is always a great play, especially at this price tag. He holds a .284 average against righties in 2017 and 17 of his 22 RBIs have come against such pitchers. Straily does hold an above average k-rate this season which will lower Springer’s ownership percentage.

Jake Lamb $3,500 vs. Zack Wheeler (RHP) @ Chase Field

Whenever Jake gets to face a righty in a hitters ballpark it is not easy to fade him. He is slugging .567 and batting .320 against right handed pitchers this season and gets a nice matchup against Zack who isn’t very efficient against lefties. Jake has also been seeing the ball well lately suggested by his 8 hits over the last 4 games. This game has a 9.5 projected run total due mainly to Chase Field being very hitter friendly having the 2nd highest runs per game park factor and the 2nd highest home runs park factor. This is also a game you may want to stack with either team for this exact reason along with subpar pitching.

Cody Bellinger $3,300 vs. Matt Cain (RHP) @ AT&T Park
By now you surely have heard the hype on this rookie as he has been crushing the ball this season. 6 of his 7 home runs have come against righty pitchers and Matt Cain, while having crazy home/road splits, has been susceptible to getting rocked by lefty sluggers. Cody has seen regular playing time with Toles done and even though he has been striking out a fair amount lately, he is still a very dangerous hitter and is in a great spot tonight. Cain has been awful in May thus far (11.88 ERA) and is giving up a .328 average to lefties. With his price under 3.5k, he is certainly worth a look tonight.

Hernan Perez $3,100 vs. Luis Perdomo (RHP) @ Petco Park

The Brewers have been hitting the cover off the ball lately and Perez has been right in the middle of it. He carries a .286 average into this matchup against righty Perdomo who holds a 4.96 ERA at home. Perez has been particularly effective against righties slugging .890 with 4 home runs. However, Perdomo has limited opposing righties to a miniscule .177 average and Petco isn’t the most friendly ballpark for hitters. Having noted this, Perez has still had success inside this park over the last 3 years hitting .450 over 20 ABs. The fact that Perdomo has found success against righties this season could drop Perez’s ownership making him an intriguing play tonight. 6 for his last 13 including 3 XBHs, Perez has found a bit of a hot streak that could very easily continue tonight, especially the way this Brewers team is playing lately. For those who use BvP, Perez has had 4 ABs against Luis in his career and 3 of those were hits.

Trevor Plouffe $2,900 vs. Yovani Gallardo (RHP) @ Safeco Field

Trevor has had an effective month of May so far to the tune of a .294 average and .529 SLG. He will get righty Yovani Gallardo who has been ineffective against righties to say the least, giving up a .333 opposing batting average. Trevor has 9 hits in his last 6 games started that has included 2 homers and 2 doubles. He is also 4-14 (.286) against Yovani in which 2 of those hits were home runs. While his .233 average might scare people away, he is in a decent spot tonight and priced very affordably.
