If you read my Value Vault article this morning covering the Early-Only slate, you’re likely in extremely good shape for the slate as Robbie Grossman homered and Chris Young went yard twice, while Evan Longoria and Derek Norris are in play as we speak.
Looking at the main slate, value is going to be an absolute MUST tonight since we have Clayton Kershaw taking on the San Diego Padres, warranting an auto-lock in my book.
With that being said, there are already some nice value plays with lineups being released as we speak. Below are my favorite value plays on the slate.
Andrew Romine (FD – $2,200 / DK – $2,100)
I’m sure many of you rostered him yesterday and Andrew Romine could find himself in an equally appealing spot tonight. He led off for the Tigers in Oakland and went 2-45 with a run and a stolen base. On the season, Romine is batting 0.266 with 1 home run, 6 RBIs, 9 runs and a stolen base. Those numbers are not beautiful, I know that, but keep in mind that the majority of his at-bats have come from the 7-8-9 spots in the lineup. He’s more effective against righties from the left side of the plate as he’s demonstrated this season, posting a 0.311 wOBA and a 0.125 ISO while keeping his strikeouts in check at a 15.7% clip. He gets to face Jesse Hahn tonight, who has allowed a 0.324 wOBA, a 0.418 SLG and 1.15 HR/9 to left-handed batters over his career. While Romine is not a sexy play by any means, he provides the necessary salary relief you’ll need in cash games tonight if you plan to roster Kershaw (do it).
Curtis Granderson (FD – $2,400 / DK – $3,600)
Grandson is more of a value play on FanDuel rather than on DraftKings, but he warrants a look on both sites tonight thanks to how well he’s been playing. Over his last two games, Granderson has gone 3-8 with two doubles, one home run, 3 RBIs, 4 runs and a walk, averaging 25.15 FDP over that span. He’s been moved to the #5 spot in the order, giving him more RBI opportunities than he found in the leadoff spot and draws an enticing matchup against Odrisamer Despaigne of the Marlins tonight. Despaigne pitched 30 innings in 2016 and allowed a 0.369 wOBA to left-handed hitters and had a 5.49 SIERA with an 11.9% BB-rate…yikes. I’m an advocate for all Mets lefties tonight, but I see Granderson as an ideal value play on tonight’s Kershaw slate.
Kelby Tomlinson (FD – $2,400 / DK – $3,300)
I’ve tried to keep the value plays extremely cheap today because of Kershaw’s astronomical salary, so my final value play sits at $2,400 in the LEADOFF spot for the Giants tonight. The Giants have struggled to do much of anything offensively this season, so slotting Tomlinson in the leadoff spot is a shakeup that could potentially produce some offense. While he’s only seen 15 ABs this season, Tomlinson has 5 hits and draws a nice matchup tonight against rookie lefty Amir Garrett of the Reds. While his strikeout numbers have been impressive, Garrett has struggled mightily with hard contact and left-handed batters. He’s allowed a 0.353 wOBA, 0.600 SLG and 33.3% hard contact percentage against lefties. Oh yeah, he’s also surrendered 4.50 HR/9 against lefties. 4.5!! Tomlinson is in a beautiful spot tonight and has the potential for 5 at-bats. He should find his way into all of your cash lineups tonight with ease.
