Mound Gems 4/25 (with @DFSClutchBoy)

Good afternoon! I am in the process of trying to come up with a name for this article that I plan on showcasing pitching options for the main slates of MLB. ANY ideas are welcomed and can be shot to me on @DFSClutchBoy . Today is not only a Coors day, but it is a Kershaw day. Let’s get right into it.

High Tier:

Clayton Kershaw (FD – $12,700 , DK – $14,300) – Clayton Kershaw is the most expensive player on this slate by far, but for fantastic reasoning. He’s the best pitcher in the universe, hands down. There will likely never be a time this year that I suggest NOT using Kershaw. He is always going to be a cash game option and sometimes likely a staple. He is the Russell Westbrook of MLB DFS and simply never makes a bad play. If you need more reasoning to plug Kershaw tonight, the Giants are a bottom 10 team in wRC+ and he’s in a great pitchers park. Kershaw has a 30.5% strikeout rate all time against the Giants with an opponents BA of only .163. Bumgarner’s injury has also allowed Kershaw to get matched up with a pitcher that the Dodger’s should be able to tail for run support. If you can fit in the right bats with Kershaw then be my guest and roster him, you will not be disappointed. Kershaw is VIABLE IN ALL FORMATS.

Danny Duffy (FD – $9,700 . DK – $10,400) – Danny Duffy has pitched very well this season and has gone at least 7 innings in his last 3 starts. He has a 25.2% strikeout rate and 7 of the projected CWS starters have a strikeout rate above 20%. The upside for Danny Duffy is certainly there, but his price is too high for me too recommend in cash. If you plan on paying this high up in cash, just go to Kershaw. Due to ownership and upside Duffy is a VIABLE TOURNAMENT OPTION.

Middle Tier

Michael Wacha (FD – $7,700 , DK – $6,800) – Michael Wacha comes into Tuesday night in an excellent position. He has pitched very well this season and has yet to go under 6 innings in a start. The Toronto Blue Jays are currently without two of their top sluggers in Troy Tulowitzki and Josh Donaldson. This forces guys like Chris Coghlan, Ryan Goins and Ezequiel Carrera to be in the lineup. The Blue Jays strikeout rate is at a major high 24.7% and they have the second worst wRC+ in the league. This match up for Wacha is a dream one and he should be able to dominate it this evening. I am not saying to fade Kershaw in cash, but if you do, Michael Wacha is well qualified and VIABLE IN ALL FORMATS. *SP2 LOCK ON DK*

Vince Velasquez (FD – $7,500 . DK – $9,300) – Vince Velasquez has not had the best season so far, but he has still struck out 19 batters in only 15 innings of work. In each of his last two seasons Velasquez has had a strikeout rate of at least 27%. His ownership is going to be near the bottom of the barrel and this is my gut GPP call for the night. His price on DK is too high for me to warrant any excitement over him, but on fanduel Velasquez is a VIABLE GPP OPTION. (CONTRARIAN)

Low tier:

Clayton Richard (FD – $6,700 , DK -$5,100) – In Clayton Richard’s last start he actually faced the Arizona Diamondbacks and was tailed for 9 hits in 6.2 IP, but was able to record the win and get 8 strikeouts for a whopping 51 fanduel points. The Diamondbacks have some big boy bats and have been getting extremely hot, but as a team they still strikeout 24.5% of the time. I don’t find this play to be a safe one and I think that the Diamondbacks will be more patient on Richard this outing. Richard is a FADE.

As always, best of luck this evening and feel free to shoot me any questions over to my twitter!
