IT’S FINALLY HERE! The NFL season is finally upon us which means my favorite DFS sport is starting up. Tonight is the first day of the NFL season with the Super Bowl rematch. This game tonight will most likely be low scoring, so I personally am completely fading the game. I advise you to do the same. If you want to, especially on DK, you can enter lineups in the THU-MON slate and fade the slate. I am doing this because people will ignorantly play people like DT, Cam, ect. just to get exposure to this game. Their ownership percentages will be way too high and you can take advantage of this. Because of the late swap on DK, you can figure out your lineup later.
Enough of that, here are my week 1 position picks.
Dak Prescott – $5000 – vs. NYG
With Tony Romo hurt (again), Dak Prescott is my favorite cash game quarterback. The New York Giants gave up the 2nd most fantasy points to QB’s last year and I do not expect them to get much better. The Cowboys feature a very good offense. They still have Dez Bryant, Jason Witten, Ezekiel Elliot, and the best offensive line in the NFL. Prescott has the weapons to get the job done. He is also very cheap which allows you to load up at RB or WR. Fire up Dak in your cash games.
Derek Carr – $7300 – @NO
If you really don’t trust the rookie quarterback listed above, Derek Carr is the next best cash game play. The Saints gave up the most fantasy points to QB’s last year and it wasn’t even close. Even though I believe that secondary has improved, it isn’t enough to get me off of Derek Carr this week. Vegas also has this game as the highest total. It definitely has the makings of a shootout and I think with Cooper, Crabtree and Murray, Carr will put up a nice line here.
Eli Manning – $7500 – @DAL
Eli Manning is one of my favorite GPP option for this weekend. I think he will be severely underowned vs. a very poor defense in the Cowboys. Manning can still sling it and I think he will sling it early and often vs this defense. The Cowboys are without their top two pass rushers and one of their best linebackers so he should have ample time to get the ball to his targets. The Cowboys also have very shady corners in Brandon Carr, Orlando Scandrick, and Maurice Claiborne. Oh, did I forget to mention that Manning has one of the best pass catchers in the whole league? I think NYG will be able to put up yards through the air, which makes Manning a great GPP play.
Spencer Ware – $4400 – vs. SD
Jamaal Charles is doubtful for this game Sunday vs. The Chargers, so fire up Ware in your cash games. He will most likely be very high owned because he is so cheap. His price allows you to get the studs that are on the slate, so I almost think he is a must. They are 7 point favorites at home, so if the game goes the way it is supposed to, he should be able to ware (pun intended) out SD late in the 2nd half. There is some risk here though because of the crowded backfield in KC. West and Davis might get some run, but Ware should still exceed value. Fire him up in your cash games.
DeAngelo Williams – $7000 – @WAS
If you are playing a slate that includes the Monday night games, DeAngelo Williams is obviously a great play. With LeVeon Bell suspended, Williams will receive a lot of touches here in this game. In games where Bell was out last year, Williams flourished. You have to pay $7000 for him, but I think it will be well worth it. He is definitely cash game playable because of his high floor.
Latavius Murray – $5600 – @NO
As I already mentioned above for Derek Carr, this team is a great team to target Sunday. In my Sunday only cash games, I will most likely be linking Ware with Murray, because that will allow me to get the stud WR I want. NO pass and run defense are obviously not the greatest, so Murray should be able to easily hit value. Also, like I mentioned above, this game has all the makings of being a shootout. There will be plenty of yards and points between the two, so I have no issue using a RB and QB together in the same lineups.
Todd Gurley – $7800 – @SF
If you really feel like paying up for running back this weekend, why not get the best one? Todd Gurley has a super matchup vs the tumbling 49ers. Last year in his only matchup vs the 49ers, Gurley put up 26.6 points. He does come at an expensive price, but for that production, you’ll definitely take it. I expect the Rams to be able to get a lead in this game and just hand it off to Gurley most of the 2nd half. He’s a great GPP play and even a cash game play.
Ryan Matthews – $5700 – vs. CLE
Matthews is one of my favorite GPP plays on this slate. He will definitely be under-looked and under-owned which is great for GPPs. The Eagles are starting a rookie QB in Carson Wentz which could be good and bad for people using Ryan Matthews. The Bad = he might struggle to move the ball down field. The Good = with a rookie QB, the Eagles might turn around and give the ball to Matthews 20+ times a game. Also, rookie QBs love to check down. This means Matthews could be in line for a handful of catches too. Matthews should be able to crush value versus one of the poorest defenses on the slate!
Julio Jones – $9400 – vs. TB
Do I really have to explain this pick? Julio Jones is one of the best wide receivers in the game and has a clear rapport with QB Matt Ryan. In a full point per reception site like DraftKings, Jones should be a cash lock. He has an extremely high floor because of his number of targets, but also has an extremely high ceiling. He is my top play overall on this slate. Locked and loaded in my cash games, plus will be in a lot of my GPPs.
Amari Cooper/Michael Crabtree – $7200/$5500 – @NO
See Derek Carr + Latavius Murray. This game will be high scoring and I think OAK is the team to target here. Crabtree is a guy who has a high floor because of his receptions total. I like him in cash/GPPs. Cooper is a little more expensive but is obviously more talented. He has a high floor but also a high ceiling. I see him taking off this season and starting his take off week 1.
Jarvis Landry – $6000 – @SEA
I actually really love Jarvis Landry this week @SEA. This might sound insane, but hear me out. Seattle is the biggest favorite this weekend and rightfully so. This means that Tannehill will be passing a lot in this game. Sure SEA is one of the best defenses in the league, but the place they struggle with is the slot wide receiver, which happens to be where Landry lines up the most. He’s a target and PPR monster, which is what we target. He’s also fairly cheap, which means he should be able to exceed value. He could also end up with about 10 receptions 80 yards and TD. Love him in all formats.
Tajae Sharp – $3000 – vs. MIN
Just look at that price tag. Dirt cheap for a #1 WR. He’s boom or bust, but doesn’t need a lot to hit value. I could see using him to load up everywhere else.
Jason Witten – $4100 – vs. NYG
Jason Witten has a solid price tag this weekend and is a great cash game play. He will be in line for 5 receptions which will be plenty enough to exceed value. Dak will most likely be looking for him often. NYG doesn’t have the linebackers and safeties to slow down Witten, so I love him in cash.
Jared Cook – $2900 – @JAX
Jared Cook is one of the most talented TE’s in the league and now he has the best QB in the league. At $2900, he gives you some serious salary relief to load up on some other spots. With Rodgers, he could blow up and have a huge night. At $2900, he doesn’t even need to do that. He only needs a few catches to hit value. I love him in cash and GPPs this weekend as he’ll probably find most of my lineups.
That’ll do for this week’s article. There are a lot of good plays but these are definitely my favorite. If you have any questions, you can tweet me @breeden_bryce. Good luck to everyone!
