Fanduel MLB Breakdown – 8/10

Well the streak is over. Last night snapped our 6-game winning streak as we put together a pretty brutal lineup. It wasn’t pretty out of the gate when Marco Estrada couldn’t find the strike zone and the Jays’ offense looked lost against Drew Smyly.

You live and you learn. One of the most important things to develop when playing daily fantasy sports is short-term memory. With that being said, let’s forget about last night and move onto today’s slate. Our team has been breaking the slate down and I wanted to put it into article form. Unlike the other breakdown articles, I will be including both pitchers and hitters, and touching on some high-priced bats while also including bats that you can fit no matter who you pitch.

Let’s break it down.

J.A. Happ | vs Tampa Bay | $9,200

Plain and simple, Happ is our play today. There are no clear-cut aces on the board (although you could argue that Verlander has performed as such this season) and Happ offers the upside of an ace while coming at a value price. He’s surrendered more than one run only once in his previous 6 outings and has upped his strikeouts, fanning 11 twice in that same span. He comes into this contest with a 3.02 ERA at home in 65.2 innings this season (with 65 strikeouts) and as the overwhelming -191 favorite. While the Rays still have Evan Longoria, they shipped off their lefty-killer in Steve Pearce at the deadline, and also strike out at a 28% clip against southpaws. If you’re looking for a safe and affordable option tonight, Happ is your guy.

Other options: Justin Verlander (also a great cash play), Felix Hernandez, Robbie Ray (GPP only)

Must-Have Bat

Adrian Beltre | vs Jorge De La Rosa | $3,200

Fanduel is out of their mind pricing Beltre at only $3,200 tonight. While he is certainly not the same player he once was, Beltre is still batting .278 with 17 home runs and 68 RBIs this season, and has a huge shot at padding those stats tonight. He’s been picking up his play as of late hitting .310 over his last seven days with 4 of his 9 hits going for extra bases and his matchup couldn’t get any better tonight. Beltre has a .395 wOBA, .219 ISO and a .333 BABIP against lefties this season and his counterpart, Jorge De La Rosa, is allowing a .367 wOBA and a .332 BABIP to right-handed hitters this season. He’s my home run call today, lock him in with confidence.

Secondary Must-Have: Carlos Beltran ($3,300)

High-Priced Bat

Anthony Rizzo | vs Ricky Nolasco | $4,600

$4,600 is a steep price to pay for anyone, but spending it on Anthony Rizzo today is completely warranted. Rizzo currently boasts a .423 wOBA against right-handed pitchers and Nolasco is a fly-ball pitcher. Nolasco only has a 16.1% soft contact rate while he holds an absurd 35.3% hard hit rate and a career worst 12.9% HR/FB ratio. While Rizzo is getting a bit of a park downgrade by heading to Anaheim, the Cubs offense should have one of, if not the highest team total on the board and should have no problem knocking Nolasco out of the game by the sixth inning at the latest. I would do what it takes to fit Anthony Rizzo in at first base tonight.

Other Options: Adam Jones / Mark Trumbo, Dexter Fowler

Bargain Bat

Stephen Vogt | vs Yovani Gallardo | $2,600

In order to fit Rizzo, you’re going to need a couple bargain bats and there might not be a cheaper option in a better spot tonight than Stephen Vogt. Yovani Gallardo has completely fallen off of a cliff over the last couple of seasons, with this being his worst. He currently holds 5.47 ERA, a 4.85 BB/9 rate, a .315 BABIP with a 38.9% fly-ball rate. Vogt typically hits up in the order against right-handed pitching and if he hits as high as third, there is a good chance at 5 at-bats because of how bad Gallardo is. With the catching position being nothing to spend your money on, I find it safe to call Vogt a lock for $2,600.

Other Options: Ryan Schimpf, Lorenzo Cain (for $2,800 that’s an absolute steal), Jabari Blash
